“Reflexive modernization,” which came to the fore from the late 1960s and the 1970s triggered tectonic shifts in the world of art, giving rise to “art in the age of post-industrial society.” At this juncture, the medium — in various fields of art — began to be liberated from its association with Modernist reductionism. When “photography” — as the realization of modern visuality derived from the collective unconscious of humankind — is liberated from its association with a specific medium, what, then, is the “principle of photography” that must still be questioned? This question bridges the 1970s and the present day, fueling the desire to lay bare the critical juncture between photography and contemporary art. Now is the time to “peel away” the concept of “the work of art in the age of its technological reproduction” from “photography.”
