Discover New Asia Vol.3

Discover New Asia Vol.3 / Thomas Sauvin

Since 2009, French artist and archivist Thomas Sauvin has collected more than one million anonymous photographs, primarily in the form of 35mm negatives salvaged from a recycling plant on the outskirts of Beijing. These photographs, shot by everyday people in late 20th century China, document the aspirations, social rituals, and material culture of a rapidly changing society, and attest to the unique position of analogue photography in documenting modern life before the transition to digital. By recontextualizing these salvaged private records through photobooks, exhibitions, and installations, Sauvin’s artistic practice transforms fragments of everyday life into a collective visual memory, tracing the past and present of a rapidly changing Asia. Drawing from this archive, Things Left Behind is a special exhibition co-curated by Holly Roussell and KIM Jeong Eun, tracing the evolution of this artistic practice that has helped redefine contemporary approaches to found photography and the photobook as art.
